Former President Donald Trump filed class-action lawsuits on Wednesday against Facebook, Google, and Twitter, as well as their CEOs, intensifying his long-running spat with the firms over their suspensions of his accounts.
The lawsuits were filed in the Southern District of Florida, and Trump stated during a press conference in Bedminster, New Jersey, that they will seek an injunction barring the businesses from allegedly censoring the American people.
The lawsuits claim that the companies violated Trump’s First Amendment rights by suspending his accounts and argue that Facebook in particular should no longer be considered a private company but rather a “state actor” whose actions are constrained by First Amendment restrictions on government restrictions on free speech. Historically, the First Amendment has been interpreted to limit only government acts, not those of private businesses. .
